Accounting serves as the primary information system for all businesses, and for non-profit organizations. It is often called the language of business. Financial Accounting deals with the preparation of financial statements by management and the auditing and attestation of these statements by public auditors. These two roles are essential for the efficient allocation of investor capital to firms and holding management accountable for the safeguarding of investor interests. Managerial Accounting deals with internal reporting using the same accounting information system and other knowledge sources. The third component to accounting practice is providing legal, ethical, and technical expertise on the preparation of tax returns on behalf of organizations. This dynamic field is characterized by continuous change in response to changing business practices and the relatively recent proliferation of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) as a partner to the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) of the United States. Students learn the basic conceptual framework of financial reporting, including accrual accounting, and all of the analytical, quantitative and practical skills necessary for work in these areas. The Accounting major is comprised of courses in Accounting, Economics, and Quantitative Methods, as well as, Business Law and Ethics. An Accounting major may find employment in professional accounting firms, corporations, non-profit organizations and government in a variety of capacities.
Accountants constitute the majority of CEOs in US corporations. Manhattanville is in close proximity to New York City with its abundant opportunities for internships and employment in accounting. All Manhattanville College students are required to declare an academic minor. A minor will help Accounting graduates tailor their education to their specific career aspirations.
The undergraduate major in accounting provides an excellent general foundation for our students. However, it should be kept in mind that, in order to meet the New York State education requirement for C.P.A. licensing, students will need to complete additional post graduate course work.
